Exploring the Different Roast Levels and Coffee Dynamics
Roast levels indicate how much the coffee beans have been roasted and actively shape the final flavour profile of the coffee. We can identify roast levels by observing the bean's physical appearance, measuring caffeine content, analyzing its chemical composition, and other analysis techniques. In the hot environment of the roaster, coffee beans progress through various roast levels as they heat up, with each level producing unique flavour notes and characteristics.

With regard to lighter roasts, the coffee beans are roasted for a shorter period. This preserves as much of their original characteristics as possible. Light roasts are typically characterized by their light brown colour, higher acidity, and slightly higher caffeine content. These roasts offer a delicate flavour profile, often showcasing the beans' natural fruity, or floral notes. Saltwinds' Ethiopian Yirgacheffe light roast is a vibrant, clean coffee with loads of fruity flavour, with notes of blueberry and lemon. Light roasts are ideal for those who prefer a more intricate, lighter taste experience.
Medium Roast
Medium roasts strike a balance between the delicate bean characteristics highlighted in a light roast and the development of deeper roasty flavours. These beans typically exhibit a richer, deeper brown colour and offer a pleasant balance of acidity and body. Medium roasted coffees often showcase nutty or chocolate notes with hints of fruitiness. Saltwinds' Captain's Blend, our medium roast blend, offers a smooth, balanced and easy-going coffee experience. This roast level appeals to a broader range of coffee enthusiasts with various preferences - its a great choice when you are not sure about someone's coffee preferences.
Dark Roast
As the beans continue to roast, they become a darker roast. Dark roast beans are exposed to higher temperatures for a longer duration, which causes some of the natural coffee oils in the coffee bean to be released. This usually results in a dark brown colour with an oily sheen. Dark roasts feature pronounced roasty flavours, with little to no acidity. Typical tasting notes are roasted nuts, bittersweet chocolate, and smoky or woodsy flavours. Saltwinds' Drunken Sailor dark roast blend offers a powerful punch of robust flavours with a smooth tasting finish. This coffee is a great choice for those who enjoy a more robust and intense coffee experience.
Caffeine Content
Despite their more robust flavour, darker roasts do not usually have more caffeine than lighter roasts. In fact, the reverse is true as the roasting process breaks down some of the caffeine molecules. Darker roasts are heavier, and contain less caffeine by volume. It's important to note that while lighter roasts generally have higher caffeine contents per cup, the variation in caffeine levels across roast levels is not as substantial as one might think. The differences in caffeine content are more strongly influenced by factors such as bean variety, origin, and brewing method.
Roast levels are an integral aspect of the coffee world, influencing the flavour, aroma, and overall experience of each cup. Moreover, the journey from light to dark roasts showcases the versatility of coffee, influenced by the duration of the roasting process. By appreciating the artistry behind roast levels, coffee enthusiasts can enhance their understanding and enjoyment of this beloved beverage.
