Want to learn how to make delicious and refreshing cold brew coffee from home? Look no further! In this blog I provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to create the perfect cold brew coffee! This cold brew coffee is a great crowd pleaser, perfect for social gatherings!

This coffee is easy to prepare, and after just one day of waiting, the drink is yours to enjoy whenever you’d like! You can make just one jar of this delicious drink, or as many as you want! Let’s take a look at what you’ll need for this recipe!!

Ingredients

  • 1 Litre Mason Jar
  • 1 Coffee Sock (per 1 Litre jar)
  • Cold Water
  • 1 Cup of Saltwinds Cold Brew Coarse Ground Coffee (per 1 Litre jar)

Instructions

Step 1: Put the Coffee Sock Into the Mason Jar

You want to place your coffee sock into your empty mason jar, this is where you will be placing your ground coffee. Ensure that the coffee sock has a wide opening so that you can fit all the needed ground coffee into it. Leave a little bit of the coffee sock above the rim of your mason jar, you’ll want to fold a bit of it over the rim and seal it with the lid of the mason jar later to ensure the coffee sock stays in place.

Step 2: Add Ground Coffee To The Coffee Sock

Now you want to gradually fill up your coffee sock with your coarsely ground coffee. I recommend using Saltwinds Cold Brew coffee for this recipe, which you can find here.

It is coarsely ground made specifically for cold brew, this is the best type of grind for cold brew. The coarsely ground beans allow for a slower and smoother extraction during the steeping process, which in turn makes for a sweeter, smoother, and less bitter tasting coffee

Step 3: Add Cold Water, and SWIRL!!!

For Cold Brew Coffee, we actually brew this type of coffee using cold water as opposed to hot water like in many other coffee drinks. This is because cold water actually extracts less of the bitter compounds found in coffee. Cold water enhances the natural flavours found in coffee, bringing out some of the more subtle flavours in coffee you might not taste as much when brewing a hot coffee beverage. Using cold water also allows for immediate customization with desired milks and/or creams that you may like to add.

We want to pour about 1 cup of cold water directly over our ground coffee in our coffee sock, or just until the level of the water is higher than that of the ground coffee. Once we have done that, don’t shake your mason jar, (especially as there is no lid on it yet), but swirl around the jar, ensuring that all of the coffee grounds inside all become wet, getting a nice even coating of water throughout all the grinds. We want to ensure we are bringing out some flavour from each one of those grinds!

After you have evenly coated all of your coffee grinds by swirling them around in the cold water, top up your cold brew with some more cold water, until your mason jar is full. Once full, put the lid on your mason jar sealing it up, and now it’s time to put it in the fridge!

Step 4: Wait…

Now we let the cold brew coffee sit in the fridge for at least 12-24 hours, yes you read that correctly, we have to wait at least 12 hours before removing it from the fridge, but we recommend you wait a full day. I know waiting so long for your coffee can be painful, but during that time you could make all sorts of other coffee recipes, just think of all the possibilities!

You may be wondering why we have to wait so long before we can drink our delicious brew, and the answer to that is that cold water extracts water from coffee much slower than hot water, so in order to achieve that desired delicious flavour, we must be patient and let the coffee do its thing, but believe me, it’s well worth the wait! Letting the coffee sit for 24 hours lets all of the coffee grinds fully saturate, bringing you the best flavour possible!

Step 5: Remove the Coffee Sock From Cold Brew Coffee

Now it’s time for the messy step… removing the coffee sock! I’d have some paper towel on standby for this step as it can make quite the mess. Grab your mason jar(s) our of the fridge and open them up, then pinch the top of the coffee sock together and slowly pull them out, the wet coffee grinds might make this challenging, so you may need to use a bit of force. Doing this over a large bowl may help you save time on clean up! Once the coffee sock is out of the mason jar, and the coffee grind inside along with it, you can now top up your mason jar with more cold water, either all the way to the top if you’d like it black, or save a little space for any milks, creams, etc…

Step 6: Add Desired Additional Ingredients To Your Cold Brew Coffee — Or Don’t!

This is the step where you can customize your drink to your hearts content, add some milk, cream, oat milk, or whatever you like! The drink is typically served over ice, so think about adding what would taste best for you. I’d recommend trying it black before adding anything, but if that isn’t your style, then add whatever you like!

Step 7: Pour Cold Brew Coffee Over Ice and… ENJOY!!!

Get some glasses out as well as some ice cubes, heck maybe even your special spherical ice cube you save for special occasions! Pour your newly made cold brew over your ice for yourself and company, and enjoy!

Let us know what you think of the cold brew recipe! Is it your new favourite? I sure hope so! Enjoy!
