Is Cold Brew Just Iced Coffee?
People often think that cold brew and iced coffee are the same thing. Although they are both forms of cold coffee, various factors cause them to differ.
Cold brew is prepared using a more time-consuming method. Cold brew requires a larger amount of grounds when preparing the coffee. These grounds are also more coarse than what is used to make hot coffee. The coffee grounds are steeped with cold water and left in the refrigerator or at room temperature for 12-24 hours. After being immersed for at least 12 hours, the coffee can be prepped as desired and poured over ice.
Iced coffee is brewed the same as any regular hot coffee, using hot water and whatever method you use to make your normal coffee. This process is much less time-consuming than preparing cold brew. Once the coffee is brewed, it can be chilled in the refrigerator and poured over ice when desired. This difference in preparation methods leads to a difference in both strength and taste of the coffee.
Is Cold Brew Stronger?
When asking whether or not cold brew is stronger, it is important to specify what exactly you mean by stronger. Strength in coffee can refer to the overall taste, bitterness and boldness of the coffee as well as its caffeine content. The longer the coffee is steeped, the stronger it will be. This steeping time creates opportunity for more extraction from the coffee grounds, causing the coffee to be more concentrated, creating a bolder flavor.
Much like the level of boldness in taste of the coffee, the level of caffeine also depends on how long the coffee is steeped for and how many coffee grounds are used. The more coffee grounds that are used and the longer they are immersed, the more caffeine is extracted, resulting in the coffee being stronger in terms of caffeine content.
Cold brew has also been shown to be less acidic and bitter than hot coffee. Hot water causes the compounds responsible for acidity and bitterness to break down in coffee, but because cold brew uses cold water, these elements are not as present in cold brew coffee.
In comparison with iced coffee, cold brew is stronger in terms of boldness, taste, and caffeine content. This is ultimately a result of the longer process and the larger amount of coffee grounds used. Cold brew is also a great option for those looking for less acidity in their coffee as well as less bitterness.
